For your protection legally, you should be prepared to ask any moving company you’re thinking of using for their state and federal license number (s) and verify with the state or federal departments to ensure your rights are protected. Call or click the link below to get the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) to verify any moving company’s license. This is for your protection as a consumer! This ensures that the company you are planning on using has all insurance coverages in place (i.e. workmens comprehensive insurance, cargo insurance, limited liability insurance) and that the business operates within normal business ethics. Workmens Comprehensive Insurance is very expensive for moving companies in this industry and most movers (not licensed) DO NOT have this important policy and chances are that particular mover cannot afford it. If the mover in question doesn’t, that or any other non insured non-licensed mover on your personal or business property who gets hurt could turn around and sue you! Also another expensive policy a mover should have is cargo insurance. If they dont have this, you will be at a loss of no furniture coverage for all of your goods.
If you ever are in doubt, ask the mover for a copy of the company’s insurance certificates for all coverages mentioned above to verify they have all coverage’s in place! They should never have a problem producing an official copy of proof DIRECT from the insurance carrier – NOT THE MOVING COMPANY! If your copy comes from the mover itself, chances are they do not have real insurance. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is also another nice way for you to see how the company conducts its business.
